SERDANG: The ayam serama -- a bantam breed of chicken -- may be on its way to becoming a national icon.
The National Federation of World Serama Organisation yesterday initiated an awareness campaign at the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism International Show here in support of this goal.

"This campaign is named 'One Million Signatures of Malaysians' and is to support the declaration of ayam serama as an iconic bird," the association's patron, Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Hasan Malek said.

"Upon pledging their signatures, they will also be automatically accepted as the association's member for free," he added.
Hasan said the world's lightest chicken is also a true 1Malaysia icon as it is favoured by Malaysians of all races as a domestic pet.

"We want to show our prime minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, that the 1Malaysia concept envisioned by him, can be made a reality through many forms, the ayam serama being one of them," he said.

Hasan said the association would also be working with the Department of Veterinary Services as well as the Agriculture Department to make the highly prized bird a national icon.

Hasan was speaking to reporters after launching the campaign at the Malaysia Agro-Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS).

A soft launch of a book on the world's smallest chicken was also held.

Entitled Serama Malaysia-Ayam Terkecil Dunia, the 100-page book, detailing the breeding and disease control aspects, as well as the market potential for the bird, was written by the National Federation of World Serama Organisation president, Ahmad Fauzi Mohamed.

The Malaysian serama is the result of selective cross-breeding of many bantam breeds. The champion grade cockerels weigh 0.22kg to 0.34 kg while the weight for hens range from 0.17kg to 0.28kg.
